BJA’s National Training and Technical Assistance Center (NTTAC) is pleased to announce the launch of the BJA Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) Collaboration Portal – a new interactive web-based system that facilitates collaboration among BJA staff and BJA TTA grantees. The TTA Collaboration Portal will enhance information sharing capabilities and make it easier for BJA staff and TTA grantees to work together in the provision of TTA services.

Please join the National Criminal Justice Association (NCJA) webinar, Innovations in Substance Abuse Treatment and Abstinence Reinforcement. The webinar will take place on Tuesday, February 25 at 3 p.m. and will examine the research and the science behind two innovations in substance abuse treatment that can improve treatment effectiveness and enhance the number of people who receive services. Specifically, this webinar will look at CBT4CBT, a computer based cognitive behavioral intervention designed for substance treatment.

Please join the National Criminal Justice Association (NCJA) webinar, Beginning the Conversation: The Affordable Care Act, Medicaid Expansion and Your Justice Agency. The webinar will take place on Wednesday, February 19 at 3 p.m. EST and is the first in a series of webinars that will highlight how the expansion of health coverage can be leveraged to enhance public safety.

As part of our commitment to increase collaboration amongst BJA staff and BJA’s training and technical assistance (TTA) providers, BJA NTTAC will release a collaboration portal in the coming weeks. The collaboration portal is a web-based system that will allow BJA providers to view up-to-date information on TTA activity trends, search directories to identify relevant BJA criminal justice partners, and utilize a geographic information system to visually see the distribution of BJA NTTAC TTA activity across the United States.

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) Director Denise O’Donnell recently spoke with the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) in an interview on pretrial justice and BJA’s efforts to address pretrial issues. The interview included topics such as evidence-based practices, assistance to state and local leaders on improving their pretrial policies, and BJA’s new Smart Pretrial Demonstration Project.

Please join the National Criminal Justice Association (NCJA) and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) webinar, Tribal-State Corrections Collaboration Strategies for Meeting the Needs of Native Inmates. The webinar will take place on Monday, February 3 at 3 p.m. EST. During the webinar, participants will discuss the development and implementation of culturally-sensitive services targeted towards tribal members in state correctional programs.

Please join the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys (APA) for their January Final Fridays webinar, Community Prosecution: Advanced Problem-Solving, which will be held on Friday, January 31, from 3-4 p.m. EST. This free webinar will provide an opportunity for new and experienced prosecutors, police officers, criminal justice professionals, and community members who are interested working on problem-solving teams to improve their neighborhoods.

The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) will hold its 2014 Winter Conference from January 22-25 in Washington, DC. The conference provides networking and professional development opportunities for the NSA’s membership and includes exhibits from vendors offering services and trainings for sheriffs and law enforcement across the country. Keynote speakers for the conference’s two plenary sessions are John F. Sopko, Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, and James B. Comey, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The Integrated Justice Information Systems (IJIS) Institute will host its three-day National Symposium, formerly known as the IJIS Institute Industry Briefing, from January 15-17 in Arlington, Va. The name change reflects the expansion of audience to include not only industry outside of IJIS membership, but government practitioners, educators, and non-profit organizations.

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) recently released a policy brief, Medicaid and Financing Health Care for Individuals Involved with the Criminal Justice System, which provides an overview of federal Medicaid law as it relates to justice-involved populations. The policy brief also covers policy options available to improve continuity of coverage while ensuring federal funds are spent appropriately, provides examples of best practices from various states, and offers recommendations for state and local governments.
