Check Out BJA’s Recent Publication – Medicaid and Financing Health Care for Individuals Involved with the Criminal Justice System

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) recently released a policy brief, Medicaid and Financing Health Care for Individuals Involved with the Criminal Justice System, which provides an overview of federal Medicaid law as it relates to justice-involved populations. The policy brief also covers policy options available to improve continuity of coverage while ensuring federal funds are spent appropriately, provides examples of best practices from various states, and offers recommendations for state and local governments. The recommendations discussed in the publication include discontinuing automatic Medicaid terminations, making effective use of federal Medicaid funding for inpatient services, screening individuals for Medicaid eligibility at every opportunity, and ensuring that Medicaid coverage for the newly eligible offers an adequate scope of services. The policy brief was developed in partnership with the Legal Action Center and the Council of State Governments Justice Center. To download a PDF version of the policy brief, click here.
