The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) Director Denise O’Donnell recently spoke with the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) in an interview on pretrial justice and BJA’s efforts to address pretrial issues. The interview included topics such as evidence-based practices, assistance to state and local leaders on improving their pretrial policies, and BJA’s new Smart Pretrial Demonstration Project. During the interview, BJA Director O’Donnell highlighted short-term training and technical assistance provided through BJA NTTAC. Examples of support from BJA NTTAC included projects with the New York Association for Pretrial Services Agencies to develop a comprehensive action plan to achieve uniform compliance with standards and the National Association of Pretrial Services Agencies’ accreditation, and with the Oakland County, MI Pretrial Services to assist Oakland County in creating a strategy for educating key stakeholders—including the judiciary, state legislators, and county commissioners—regarding the issue of pretrial reform.
