SPI Webinar – The Importance of the Chief Executive in Smart Policing

The Smart Policing Initiative (SPI) presents the webinar The Importance of the Chief Executive in Smart Policing on September 24, 2014 from 2:00 to 3:30pm Eastern Time. Edward F. Davis, former Boston Police Commissioner, will facilitate this webinar. This webinar will explore the central role that the police chief plays in all facets of Smart Policing; the importance of Smart Policing in furthering organzational learning; and the essential role of researchers in supporting those activities. The police chief's role begins with the development of a Smart Policing plan, continues through partnership building activities, supporting analyis, implementation, and evaluation and assessment. The chief's role is pivotal in ensuring that Smart Policing supports a true learning organization and in creating a model to sustain organizational growth.

Vera Institute Webinar - PREA in Action—Committing to Safety and Respect for LGBTI Youth and Adults in Correctional Settings: Lessons From the Field

The Vera Institute of Justice, in collaboration with the National PREA Resource Center, presents a webinar on committing to a culture of safety and respect for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) youth and adults in correctional institutions. In this webinar, Lorie Brisbin, Correctional Program Specialist at the National Institute of Corrections will discuss the importance of having strong policies and practices geared toward keeping LGBTI adults and youth safe. Anne Elwart, the Probation Manager at the William F. James Boys Ranch in Santa Clara County, California, and Major Debra Schmidt from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office in Texas will discuss steps their agencies have taken to create cultures of safety and respect for LGBTI people in their custody. 

Who Should Attend:
Staff from state departments of corrections, jails, juvenile agencies, community corrections agencies, and lockups. PREA Coordinators and PREA Compliance Managers are encouraged to attend. Other recommended attendees include advocates from LGBTI groups, victims services, and other community-based organizations.
