National Crime Prevention Council

Organization Abbreviation:
NCPC
Overview:

The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) is the nation’s leader in crime prevention. NCPC is a private, nonprofit organization whose primary mission is to help people keep themselves, their families, and their communities safe from crime. NCPC manages a public education campaign—symbolized by McGruff the Crime Dog® and his “Take A Bite Out Of Crime®” slogan.  We have a national crime prevention network of 10,000 crime prevention professionals, national, federal, state, and local organizations through the Crime Prevention Coalition of America and the National Crime Prevention Association.

NCPC publishes books, kits of camera-ready program materials, posters, and informational and policy reports on a variety of crime prevention and community-building subjects. NCPC offers training, technical assistance, and a national focus for crime prevention. It hosts www.mcgruff.org’s Milstein Child Safety Center for children, which has games, stories, and advice from McGruff, and http://www.ncpc.org for adults, which offers topical prevention tips, describes prevention practices for community building, and helps anchor prevention policy and activities at the local level. NCPC operates demonstration programs in schools and neighborhoods.  We take a major leadership role in youth crime prevention.

Now three decades after McGruff’s first TV appearance, more than 83 percent of children, teens, and adults recognize him and approximately 1,500 law enforcement agencies use McGruff costumes to spread the word about prevention. Thanks to NCPC and McGruff, Americans know how to “Take A Bite Out Of Crime®.”
