The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) VALOR Officer Safety Initiative recently released the Law Enforcement Officer Safety Toolkit. The toolkit provides a comprehensive snapshot of federal resources available to state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to assist them in learning about and promoting officer safety.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, while the week in which that day falls is designated as National Police Week. This week honors the U.S. law enforcement community and recognizes law enforcement and first responder personnel who have fallen in the line of duty.

The Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor nomination period is now open. The Medal of Valor is awarded by the President of the United States to a public safety officer who has exhibited exceptional courage, extraordinary decisiveness and presence of mind, and unusual swiftness of action, regardless of his or her own personal safety, in the attempt to save or protect human life. The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) will host an informational webinar on the FY 2016 National Initiatives: Officer Safety and Wellness Initiative—VALOR Program solicitation on Monday, March 7, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. ET. The purpose of this webinar is to share information about the solicitation with interested applicants. During the webinar, BJA staff will describe each funding category and will provide an opportunity for interested applicants to ask questions related to the solicitation.

BJA VALOR Officer Safety & Wellness Program Solicitation Webinar

This webinar will provide an overview of the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) FY 2016 National Initiatives: Officer Safety and Wellness Initiative—VALOR Program competitive solicitation. It will describe each funding category and will provide an opportunity for interested applicants to ask questions related to the solicitation of BJA staff who manage the VALOR program. VALOR Officer Safey Conference

The VALOR Conference is designed to provide officers with the opportunity to gain knowledge and be reenergized in their profession by introducing the principles of the VALOR Initative. VALOR presentations seek to engage officers, make them aware of the threats facing them, and encourage them to adopt and implement VALOR training principles. Topics will include identifying emerging threats and challenges, implementing casualty care and rescue tactics, recognizing pre-incident indicators of a potential assault, and enhancing officer resiliency.
