In commemoration of Black History Month, the Office of Justice Programs Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) will present a web forum discussion on best practices for reaching young men of color exposed to violence. Tomorrow, February 28 at 2 p.m. EST, join Mitru Ciarlante and John Rich, MD, MPH, for this online discussion and exchange of expertise and best practices. Registration for the next Center for Evidence-Based Crime Policy (CEBCP) – Scottish Institute for Policing Research (SIPR) Joint Symposium and Congressional Briefing on evidence-based policing is now open. The symposium, which will take place April 8-9, 2013 in Arlington, Va., will focus on translating police research into practice.

The West Virginia University Forensic Science Initiative, in collaboration with the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), is holding the 2013 Spring Essentials of Forensic Science for Legal Professionals program. The two-day program will provide the basic precepts of forensic science training and supply the tools to effectively apply this information for trial. Attendees will also be given information on evaluating the scientific rigor of expert testimony and the reliability of forensic evidence.

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) is seeking applications for the Smart Policing Initiative. This program furthers the Department of Justice's mission by assisting state and local jurisdictions in reducing crime and improving the functioning of the criminal justice system. Applicants must register with Grants.gov prior to submitting a concept paper. All concept papers must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. EST on February 14, 2013.

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) is pleased to announce that it has officially launched its social media presence with the release of its Facebook page and Twitter account. Through these social outlets, it is the hope of BJA to connect individuals within the justice community to other leaders, organizations, and resources to enhance their ability to promote public safety nationwide.

In honor of National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, which is observed on January 11 each year, NTTAC would like to announce that the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) and the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) have launched the Directory of Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) Resources for Anti-Human Trafficking Task Forces and Service Providers.

Taking place from January 23-25, the IJIS Institute Winter 2013 Industry Briefing will provide a forum for industry and government information technology (IT) leaders and experts to collaborate and discuss information-sharing practices, technology, and standards. This is a must-attend event for executives, key decision-makers, and software developers from federal, state, and local IT communities interested in information sharing. Bureau of Justice Assistance Director Denise O’Donnell will speak during the opening session on Thursday, January 24.

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) has released the BJA Strategic Plan for fiscal years 2013-2016. The plan reflects the need to be innovative, evidence-based, and results-driven during these challenging economic times. The BJA Strategic Plan is based on one overarching guiding principle: to reduce crime and recidivism, in the effort to promote a safe and fair criminal justice system. As BJA embarked upon the development of this strategic plan, five major focus areas emerged that aligned to the work of those entities, like NTTAC, that promote the mission and future vision of BJA.
