    DF 102 - Basic Digital Forensic Analysis: Previewing (Jan 2019)

    This course provides the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary to preview the most commonly encountered forms of digital evidence. The course covers Windows-based and macOS-based computers, mobile devices, and removable storage media. In a combination of lecture, discussion, and practical exercises, instructors introduce the previewing process, legal considerations, live previewing, and dead-box previewing. Students gain hands-on experience with free and commercial third-party previewing tools that are in current use by practitioners in the field.

    Learning from Error in Criminal Justice: A Sentinel Events Approach

    In criminal justice, a “sentinel event” is a bad outcome that might include a death in custody, routine police encounter that escalates to violence, mishandling of evidence, wrongful conviction, or “near miss,” in which a negative event is narrowly avoided. Too often, the criminal justice system fails to learn from these bad outcomes. Drawing inspiration from aviation, medicine, and other high-risk fields, the Sentinel Events Initiative (SEI) takes an alternative approach.

    Aerial Data: Introduction to Drone Investigations (Webinar)

Criminal use of drones is also increasing, and drone forensics is quickly becoming an important subfield of digital forensics. This presentation introduces the history of drones and the ways they are commonly used, both legitimately and in relation to a crime, and focuses on the ways law enforcement can gather and analyze evidence involving drones.

    Law Enforcement Cyber Center: A Valuable Resource for Investigators

    The Law Enforcement Cyber Center (LECC) was developed to enhance the awareness, expand the education, and build the capacity of justice and public safety agencies to prevent, investigate, prosecute, and respond to cyber threats and cyber crimes. It is intended to be a national resource for law enforcement and related justice and public safety entities. During the webinar, participants will review the website and learn about the many valuable resources that can be utilized.

    FC 102 - Financial Investigations Triage (Oct 2018)

    This course provides an overview of the actions investigators can take at the outset of a financial crime investigation. Students learn to ask critical questions, gather documentation, and analyze information for leads. Topics include obtaining and working with financial records, interviewing witnesses and suspects, and using investigative strategies for different types of financial crimes.

    Substance Use, Trauma and Domestic Violence: Critical Issues, Promising Approaches

    Substance use is a challenging issue facing domestic violence survivors and the programs that serve them. The national opioid epidemic has intensified the problem. But progress is being made. We are identifying promising approaches and building community capacity to address the complex needs of survivors. Recognition of the impact of trauma on survivors’ use of substances as well as the role of substance use-related coercion by perpetrators has led to more integrated approaches.
