Wichita, Kansas Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Site requested Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Training . Virginia Center for Policing Innovation was selected to fulfill the request and virtually provided CPTED to Wichita PSN on August 16, 2021 and August 18, 2021.

The inaugural call agenda focused on how sites are measuring progress towards goals in the midst of COVID-19 and social justice demonstrations that created a unique set of challenges for sites in the spring/summer of 2020. Research partners discussed challenges in getting access to crime data and that crime data looked very different because of the unique challenge’s neighborhoods are facing. Several mentioned looking to non-traditional data-sets including such things as 311 data to get a sense of community impacts.

LeVar Michael and Matt Perkins with LISC Safety & Justice presented on separate panels for the IACP-organized virtual meeting of CBCR sites funded in fiscal year 2019. LeVar presented on lessons learned during the planning phase and in particular on managing cross-sector partnerships and authentic community engagement.

Matt Perkins and LeVar Michael led group sessions on Community Safety & Justice Reform at the ArtPlace Virtual Summit. Joined by at over 60 conference attendees across the two sessions, the discussion introduced the role of place in crime and examples of placemaking as a crime prevention tool, including the Alameda County Sheriff's Office Eden Night Live program (FY13 CBCR site).

Washington, DC and Madison, WI shared information about ongoing efforts at their respective sites. Madison PD Captain Mike Hanson joined the call as he had recently made a public request in the Madison PD Police Blotter soliciting “reasonable, achievable ideas for what you (residents of Madison) think should be the best proactive in saving teens from arrest after arrest (which was also picked up by Madison’s local newspaper). Matt Perkins, LeVar Michael, and Brittany Sicora presented on LISC Safety & Justice’s work to the current network of LISC AmeriCorps members. The webinar featured discussion topics such as the Inclusive Healthy Places Framework, Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED), problem solving methods, and the response to the national safety and justice climate. Highlights included past and present AmeriCorps member service efforts in the areas of Safety & Justice that have taken place in Greenville, MS; Richmond, VA and Cleveland, OH.

Matt Perkins and John Connelly hosted a LISC webinar for the LISC Capacity Building Affinity Group which is made up of colleagues from local LISC offices. Our team provided an overview of the LISC Safety & Justice model. The agenda highlighted the 2012 Milwaukee and 2014 Alameda County CBCR programs where MKE built collaborative partnerships with MPD and Habitat for Humanity to determine priority homes for renovations and how Alameda County revitalized a large open lot through Eden Night Live events.
