Washington, DC and Madison, WI shared information about ongoing efforts at their respective sites. Madison PD Captain Mike Hanson joined the call as he had recently made a public request in the Madison PD Police Blotter soliciting “reasonable, achievable ideas for what you (residents of Madison) think should be the best proactive in saving teens from arrest after arrest (which was also picked up by Madison’s local newspaper). Capt. Hanson provided examples of the 70+ responses he’s received from the MPD blotter request and thoughts about next steps which he has laid out as 1) what to implement; 2) short-term fixes and long-term goals; 3) who coordinates beyond his solicitation of ideas and 4) how do we reach the most at-risk youth. Project Coordinators provided feedback to Capt. Hanson including broadening the police partnerships with local stakeholder organizations to increase opportunities to engage and connect with youth before criminal contacts and offer potential contacts for youth as part of a larger restorative justice framework. LISC will be looking to bring additional speakers to cover specific topic areas over the next several months of peer sharing calls.
