    Medical Evaluation of Child Sexual Abuse: Why Can’t We Be More Like CSI?

    A child abuse pediatrician will present an overview of the medical evaluation for suspected sexual abuse. The presenter will outline examples of the different roles between physician and nurse providers stressing the necessity of specialized training regardless of degree and the importance of participating in ongoing education and case review for quality assurance. The presenter will also discuss salient features of how the exam is performed, how to interpret findings, and when/how the collection of DNA/laboratory specimens are collected.

    Improving National Laboratory Capability and Capacity to Measure Human Exposure to Synthetic Opioids

    The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) laboratory at the National Center for Environmental Health is collaborating with public, private, and academic laboratories to respond to the opioid overdose epidemic. Some states are leveraging the Laboratory Response Network for Chemical Threats (LRN-C) infrastructure to respond to the epidemic. The webinar will cover performance of screening immunoassays, with highlights on cross-reactivity gaps in contrast to fentanyl chemical structure. Traceable Opioid Material* Kits (TOM Kits*), developed by CDC, will be described.

    Genealogy Research: Successful Convictions of a Serial Rapist

    This webinar will focus on four separate incidents that occurred from 2007 to 2012, including three first-degree rapes, a first-degree sex assault, and an attempted first-degree sex assault. These five cases were all committed by the same suspect, and DNA evidence connected four of these five incidents.

    On behalf of the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Institute for Intergovernmental Research is releasing the Partnerships to Support Data-driven Responses to Emerging Drug Threats Grant solicitation. This is part of a series of demonstration projects funded under the Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Program. These demonstration projects are designed to build capacity, foster cross-sector collaboration, and support innovation. Under this solicitation, up to 6 communities will be selected for grant awards up to $600,000, each for a 24-month period.
