    The Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center, with support from the Bureau of Justice Assistance, recently released the report “A Matter of Public Health and Safety: How States Can Support Local Crisis Systems.” The report discusses five actions state policymakers can take to fund and sustain local crisis systems, which relieve the burden on law enforcement, hospitals, and jails while providing individuals with much-needed resources to address and prevent mental health crises.

    The International Association of Chiefs of Police created the Home Safe Library of Resources as part of their work supporting Kevin and Avonte Program grant sites through the Bureau of Justice Assistance’s Reducing Injury and Death of Missing Individuals with Dementia and Developmental Disabilities program. This library is a free, publicly available, searchable online catalog that includes articles, webinars, tools, and other resources on wandering, elopement, missing persons, and law enforcement response to individuals with dementia and other developmental disabilities.

    Webinar: Internet Identifiers: Names and Numbers for Law Enforcement

    The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) have joined together to develop a presentation specifically designed for law enforcement focused on cyber security and the roles our organizations play in helping to combat this ever-evolving problem. ICANN helps coordinate the names and numbers that are used as unique identifiers in the global Internet. It is tasked with helping make sure that the Domain Name System (DNS) remains stable, secure, and resilient. Carlos Alvarez, Director of Trust and Public Safety Engagement at ICANN, will provide an overview of security threats that target the DNS or that leverage it to attack others, and will share about anti-abuse efforts on the DNS and the domain name landscape that are relevant to law enforcement. The American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) is a nonprofit, member-based organization that supports the operation and growth of the Internet. ARIN accomplishes this by carrying out its core service, which is the management and distribution of Internet number resources such as Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs) within its defined service region: Canada, the United States, and many Caribbean and North Atlantic islands. Investigating fraud and abuse in the registry is of utmost importance accurately and reliably maintaining registration information is core to ARIN's mission. Number resource fraud threatens community trust in the registry and reduces the value of the registry to those who rely on it for network operations.

    Webinar: The Value of Family

    Lt. Bill Walsh from Voorhees (NJ) Police Department and Victoria Newman from How2LoveOurCops will discuss the importance of significant others and their support in the law enforcement career. Victoria will discuss the mission and history of How2LoveOurCops, how they support families of law enforcement professionals, and their partners that help them better serve cops. Lt. Walsh will share his experiences as both a current police officer, father, and husband, but also his experiences growing up as the child of a police officer. He will discuss how those experiences have been utilized in the development of wellness programming including police family.

    Nominate a Public Safety Officer to Receive the Medal of Valor Before July 31, 2021

    The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) administers the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor Program. The Medal of Valor is the highest honor for public safety officers, and it was created when Congress passed The Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor Act of 2001. The President or Vice President award the medals annually to public safety officers who have exhibited exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, in the attempt to save or protect human life.
