Ethical Policing Is Courageous (EPIC) is a program developed by the New Orleans, Louisiana Police Department (NOPD) in an effort to educate and support its officers in the practice of peer intervention. Through EPIC, NOPD trains members of its department to identify and safely intervene when they believe that persons are at risk for doing something that would harm themselves and/or others. This peer approach to “policing” one another has proved effective for NOPD in preventing harm and promoting officer wellness. The goal of this webinar is to highlight and bring awareness to this proactive, team-focused program as a solution to the officer safety issues that law enforcement faces today. For more information—such as officer testimonials, a message from the New Orleans Superintendent of Police Michael S. Harrison, and EPIC training resources—please visit http://epic.nola.gov/home.
This webinar will explore the efforts that went into gaining support for the program, steps for implementation, challenges faced, and lessons learned. Topics will include:
- An overview of the project—how and why the project started and its effectiveness so far.
- A summary of the training that officers receive through EPIC.
- How other departments could employ a similar peer-intervention program.
There is no registration fee or cost to participate in the webinar.
