Event Description: 

This course addresses the critical need for well-trained intelligence analysts to interpret growing amounts of information. This introductory course covers the history and purpose of intelligence analysis, the intelligence cycle, analytical thinking skills, and the importance of strategic analysis. The course was developed by a consortium that included the National White Collar Crime Center, Law Enforcement Intelligence Unit, the International Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Analysis, and the Regional Information Sharing System.

This course has been certified by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency as course number WV-001-PREV.

Course structure:

  • Analysis basics. Learn about the history and purpose of intelligence analysis, legal issues and ethics, sources of information, and the intelligence cycle.
  • Types of analysis. Understand crime patterns, associations, flow, communications, and financial analysis.
  • Creative and critical thinking. Learn about brainstorming, mind mapping, and the steps to critical thinking.
  • Deterring crime. Understand strategic analysis as a tool for law enforcement personnel.
  • Hands-on experience. Work as part of a team to analyze information pertaining to several hypothetical cases.
