Cognitive Interviewing, Communication & Influence (Jul 2019)

Wednesday Jul 24, 2019 - 08:00am EDT to Thursday Jul 25, 2019 - 05:00pm EDT
Event Description:

This course introduces the art of cognitive interviewing using neuro-linguistic programming techniques. Students learn how to interview suspects, witnesses, and victims more effectively, as well as to observe brain-based deception behavior in both face-to-face and virtual communications. Topics include influence and persuasion with difficult witnesses and suspects, interpretation of body language for deceit and truthfulness, and best practices for testimony and reframing cross-examination. The instructor will break down foundational concepts pertaining to how the brain interprets and recalls information, providing an essential framework for more effective communication. There is a strong focus on communication in the courtroom, from testimony to building rapport to "reading" a jury.

Course structure:

  • Neuro-linguistic programming. Understand how the brain processes language.
  • Interviews. Learn about talking to victims, witnesses, and suspects and interpreting body language for truthfulness and deceit, as well as the power of rapport.
  • Communicating in court. Learn about testifying effectively, reading a jury, handling objections, and reframing cross-examination.
  • The digital age. Explore how virtual communication compares to face-to-face communication.
