COURSE DESCRIPTION: Law enforcement executives must make critical decisions to address the spread of methamphetamine in their communities. This online course provides an overview of the illicit methamphetamine problem from a management perspective. Methamphetamine lab hazards, manufacturing methods, OSHA regulations, equipment, training needs, and reporting issues are emphasized to assist law enforcement executives and local municipal officials to effectively combat methamphetamine production and abuse in their communities. The course also provides a guide to online resources, explains how to mobilize the community to combat the spread of methamphetamine manufacturing and use, as well as how to effectively respond to drug endangered children. The course content will: • Describe the impact of methamphetamine in communities • Identify common methamphetamine manufacturing methods • Illustrate hazards posed by methamphetamine labs • Review OSHA regulations related to methamphetamine labs • Describe crime related to methamphetamine • Provide an overview of treatment types and resources • Provide resources for information and data regarding methamphetamine • Describe special issues concerning children exposed to methamphetamine • Explain the steps and benefits in community development Upon completing registration, officers are assigned a log-in and password and directed to a special CJI Meth website. Officers can access courses 24 hours per day, 7 days per week for a specified period of time. During that time they may proceed through the material at their own pace, and may log out and log back in at times convenient to them. Online courses include slides with audio narration, photographs, graphics, videos, and optional reading. This course was originally developed for Arkansas law enforcement officers so references to Arkansas are still included in the course content. TARGET AUDIENCE: The 7-hour course is designed for Chiefs of Police, Sheriffs, Lieutenants, Captains, Assistant Chiefs, Under Sheriffs, and Chief Deputy Sheriffs. PREREQUISITES/EQUIPMENT: None
