This training program will utilize the Bring Your Own Case (BYOC) model to provide needed training to capital defense teams, as well as provide the basis for ongoing technical assistance. The combined defense team will work with a faculty of leading experts on issues directly relevant to the defenders' training needs. The agenda is developed in accordance with the BYOC model and is tailored to the specific training needs of the trainees. The program will be preceded by a single-day train-the-trainers program for program facilitators.
CJI will work with Louisiana Caddo Parish stakeholders to facilitate a local JRI engagement to understand the drivers of the current jail population and develop and implement data-driven solutions that resolve current overcrowding issues.
Center staff hosted a VTC Summit on April 2nd and April 3rd, 2024, at the National Veterans Resource Center in Syracuse, NY. This in-person summit was an opportunity for teams from the 2019 cohort (California, Ohio, Maine, Pennsylvania, and Virginia) and 2022 cohort (Arkansas, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Oregon) to connect, collaborate, and learn about veteran-specific topics through plenary and break-out sessions. Attendees included about ten VTC stakeholders from each of the nine different states that the Center has worked with on VTC strategic planning.
States face numerous and pressing criminal justice challenges that directly impact communities and agencies across multiple levels of government. State leaders—governors, legislators, and agency officials—play a critical role in ensuring public safety by setting priorities, identifying policies and programs to achieve them, and allocating finite resources that impact every area of the justice system.
Center staff are working with states in furtherance of the Veterans Treatment Court Strategic Planning Initiative. The goals of this initiative are to encourage the strengthening of VTC adherence to best practice standards, to increase readiness for states and local jurisdictions to apply for federal funding to support their programs, the successful replication of the VTC model, and the application of VTC principles to wider populations. Center staff will complete individual interviews of stakeholders and any follow-up focus groups, as needed.
