NSA Training Workshop - Leadership & Implicit Bias

Tuesday Mar 28, 2017 - 08:00am EDT to Thursday Mar 30, 2017 - 12:00pm EDT
Event Description:

The National Sheriffs' Association, The Global Center of Public Safety, and the International Academy of Public Safety are pleased to announce the “Leadership & Implicit Bias" Law Enforcement Professionals training workshop.

Overview: Unlike explicit bias (which reflects the attitudes or beliefs that one endorses at a conscious level), implicit bias is the bias in judgment and/or behavior that results from subtle cognitive processes (e.g., implicit attitudes and implicit stereotypes) that often operate at a level below conscious awareness and without intentional control. There is what you know, what you don’t know, and then there is what you don’t know that you don’t know. Implicit bias lives in the domain of what you don’t know you don’t know. For maximum impact community engaged policing, it is our responsibility as law enforcement officers to seek out and resolve those biases that exist subconsciously within each of us, due to media, history or upbringing. Through experiential learning, this workshop allows the participants to discover their own implicit bias and how it affects their experience of another person. By combining deliberate leadership, emotional intelligence, body awareness, and authentic conversation, one’s implicit biases are brought to light and dismantled.

Upon the successful completion of this workshop, the participants would be able to:

  • Determine what implicit bias “is” and “is not”;
  • Identify the key characteristics of implicit biases;
  • Discuss the developmental history of implicit bias;
  • Identify one’s own implicit biases;
  • Develop greater understanding of the framework within which these bias have occurred and will continue to occur;
  • Develop a process to continue to seek out and dismantle implicit biases; and
  • Access tools to manage the emotional state that occurs when implicit bias arises, so that their interaction with others is not negatively impacted.
  • Learn deliberate and credible leadership strategies and tactics to convert barriers to opportunities for enhance trusting community outcomes.
