This Justice Research and Statistics Association (JRSA) webinar will introduce participants to the basics of institutional review boards (IRBs), including the need for them and when to submit research protocols for review to an IRB. At the end of the webinar participants should be familiar with the following concepts/questions:
- How do I know if I am doing human subject research?
- How does an IRB ensure the rights and welfare of human subjects involved in research are adequately protected?
- Participants will learn to "issue spot" where the need for an IRB is likely to arise.
- Participants will understand the background and purpose of the relevant human subject research regulations.
- Participants will understand how to draft functional IRB protocols and procedures.

Ross is the Assistant Provost for Research Integrity at the University of Southern Maine. He is an attorney and a member of the Maine Bar. He has built a nationally recognized research compliance office that serves not only USM, but institutions throughout the State of Maine. Ross often provides technical assistance to other local institutions on regulatory compliance matters. The Research Integrity Symposium hosted by Ross attracts attendees from all over the country to learn about regulatory and ethical considerations in research.

Casey is the Research Compliance Administrator at the University of Southern Maine's Office of Research Integrity and Outreach. In this role, Casey, oversees a statewide collaborative Institutional Review Board, local Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, and USM's Institutional Bio-safety Committee. Casey is currently a Juris Doctor candidate at the University of Maine School of Law.

George is the Maine Statistical Analysis Center Director at the University of Southern Maine's (USM) Muskie School of Public Service. In addition, he is the Managing Director of the Children, Youth, and Families - Justice Policy Program focus area. He also serves as the Vice-chair of USM's Institutional Review Board. Lastly, George is the Vice-President of JRSA's Executive Committee.

Erin joined the JRSA staff in May 2015 as a Research Associate working on the Pre-Trial Justice Institute Project. She earned her B.S. in Psychology from Virginia Tech and her Ph.D. in Criminology from the University of Delaware. Prior to working at JRSA Dr. Farley was a Senior Research Associate at the Center for Court Innovation in NYC where she worked on a number of projects including an evaluation of Intelligence Driven Prosecution in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, the Manhattan Mental Health Court, and a randomized trial of an evidence-based assessment protocol in New York City drug courts. She has co-authored reports on indigent defense reforms in Brooklyn, as well as the Adolescent Diversion Program, Judicial Diversion, Improving Courtroom Communication, and the Bronx Family Treatment Court.
