On February 28, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. ET, the Strategies for Policing Innovation (SPI) program will present a webinar on “Successful Strategies to Reduce Gun Violence.” This webinar will focus on the use of offender-based strategies and crime intelligence to target gun-related violence, highlighting successful SPI sites addressing this issue.
Ms. Hildy Saizow, SPI senior subject matter expert, will facilitate the webinar and discuss gun violence trends, the role of geography, and perspectives on prevention. Dr. Scott Decker, Foundation Professor School of Criminology and Criminal Justice - Arizona State University, will discuss how strategies and impacts of actions that address firearms fit into larger police goals such as suppression and prevention.
Deputy Chief Dennis Kato of the Los Angeles, California Police Department and Chief Jonathan Lewin of the Chicago, Illinois Police Department will discuss strategies used to combat gun violence in Los Angeles and Chicago. Captain Richard Trudell of the Syracuse, New York Police Department, a recently awarded SPI site, will outline how their department plans to adapt and apply offender-focused policing to fighting gun violence in the city. Participants will learn about the different strategies used to reduce gun violence and the impact the various strategies had on reducing violence.
