Responding to Alzheimer's Disease: Techniques for Law Enforcement and First Responders (June 21, 2016)

The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) in partnership with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), and the Bureau of Justice Assistance, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice is offering opportunities to attend IACP’s  “Responding to Alzheimer's Disease: Techniques for Law Enforcement and First Responders.” 

This no-cost, one-day event will provide Virginia law enforcement first responders with the most current Alzheimer’s and dementia training available.  It features in-depth instruction to help law enforcement agencies enhance their capacity to handle calls involving people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia (AD/D.)  Resources, handouts, and opportunities for networking and information sharing will be provided.

Topics to Be Addressed

This training will address topics including: Understanding Alzheimer's Disease; Responding Effectively; Search and Rescue; and Community Resources. It will help participants:

  • Better understand Alzheimer’s disease;
  • Identify different situations in which first responders might encounter persons with Alzheimer’s disease;
  • Distinguish symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease from other conditions;
  • Communicate and collaborate with caregivers;
  • Engage community resources; and
  • Establish protocols for search and rescue specific to this population.

Who Should Attend?

Participation in this training is limited to Virginia municipal and state law enforcement officers, particularly first responders and community police/crime prevention officers.

Partial In-Service Credit

Law enforcement officers will receive partial in-service credit (PIC) for completion of this training. 

Cost and Registration

There is no registration fee to attend.  

Travel, Lodging & Meals

Participants are responsible for their travel, lodging, and meal arrangements and related expenses.
