NSA Webinar - Improving Tactical Decision Making: Knowing the Whys & Hows

Thursday May 12, 2016 - 02:00pm to 03:00pm EDT
Event Description:

Society is plagued with stories about poor tactics and excessive use of force. As such, public outcry for change is louder than ever. As a result, many agencies have attempted quick fixes without a true understanding of some of the underlying use-of-force concepts and principles that create a strong and defendable decision-making paradigm. Additionally, a better understanding of these foundational concepts will provide deputies with decision-making abilities and de-escalation skills (soft skills) that will complement their hard skills, make them more well-rounded responders and reduce use of force incidents. This National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) webinar will discuss in detail concepts like Jeopardy, Less Lethal Opportunity, the Safety Priorities, and Space and Time, as well as de-escalation techniques in a way to help officers create a foundation to help them navigate any situation. Regardless of rank or position, participants will come away with a better understanding of these tactical concepts and learn how to make better, repeatable, and defendable decisions in stressful incidents. The ability to make these decisions will not only improve officer's confidence, but also lead to more consistency across employees, reduced liability and improved public perception.
