As part of our on-going one-year grant of technical assistance in all aspects of holistic defense to the Muskegon County Public Defender Office, several members of The Center for Holistic Defense travelled to Muskegon, Michigan to conduct several days of on-site study, evaluation, guidance, and training in various aspects of holistic defense.

The Criminal Court Assessment Tool (CCAT) is a new, brief assessment tool that identifies an offender’s risk level of reoffending prior to case disposition, while also screening for key needs which, if treated, would be expected to lower the risk of reoffending. The Center for Court Innovation developed this tool to fill a gap in existing risk-needs assessment tools, which have primarily been designed to be implemented post-sentencing and with serious offenders.

The training helps prosecutors plan, implement, and evaluate new prosecutor-led diversion options. Funded under the Second Chance Act, the program seeks to encourage and provide assistance to prosecutors who are building the next generation of diversion programming: programs that serve individuals who are jail or prison bound and who frequently suffer from mental illness or drug dependency issues.

NACDL staff will speak at a series of training programs for New Jersey Office of the Public Defender attorneys preparing to represent clients at first appearances and preventive detention hearings, in conjunction with the release of The New Jersey Pretrial Justice Manual.

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) requested a subject matter expert to develop a publication summarizing the themes and findings of the January 2017 Justice Reinvestment Strategy Session forum. Alison Shames was selected to fulfill the request and provided support by attending the forum; conducting follow up interviews with BJA staff, session attendees, and other stakeholders; and drafting and delivering the report to BJA . The technical assistance commenced in January 2017 with Shames conducting pre-forum research and attending the forum on January 12 in Washington, D.C.
