The Wisconsin Chiefs of Police Association requested training on mentoring strategies to improve retention and help new police chiefs and other supervisory level law enforcement succeed during their position transitions. The presentation will highlight the impact of providing mentoring support to aspiring and transitioning law enforcement leaders, identify some of the challenges faced by law enforcement executives, and build executive mentoring skills by working through real-life examples.

The IACP New Police Chief Mentoring Project is a professional development opportunity that matches experienced mentor chiefs with newer chiefs for formal or informal mentoring, supported by the Mentoring Project team. This is a valuable opportunity that helps to connect smaller and tribal police executives to meet the unique challenges they face. The Discover Policing Mentoring Center is the home of our online database which allows participants to register as mentors or mentees, search for mentors that meet their needs, and contact potential matches directly.

This meeting will engage participants in a discussion on the current trends, issues, and concerns of smaller law enforcement agencies serving populations of 50,000 or fewer and determine what resources can be developed, promoted, or updated to meet those needs. This meeting will include project advisers from the Smaller Agency Project, representatives from the IACP Smaller Department Section, and other stakeholders. From this one-day meeting we will develop long-term and short-term recommendations on how to better serve the identified needs of smaller law enforcement agencies.
