This training of trainers provides students with resources on law enforcement suicide prevention to take back to their agencies. These attendees will then provide awareness and education on this topic to their agencies.
MSU will provide TTA for the current and/or active PSN, prior sites and requests from the field. Given the varying extent of the requests, MSU will coordinate with BJA, NTTAC, other Smart Suite TA providers, and subject matter experts to fully address TA needs. Current resources such websites, Research Partner Orientation Course (RPOC) curriculum and Smart Suite Researcher Practitioner Fellows Academy curriculum, the Violence Reduction Assessment Tool (VRAT), Strategic Action Plan template (SAP), and existing PSN and DMI materials will be shared to fulfill requests.
Since competitive funding for PSN began in FY2012, Michigan State University, School of Criminal Justice (MSU), as a PSN Training and Technical Assistance provider has hosted four PSN Research Partner Orientation Courses (RPOC) for more than 120 people from 47 cities . The RPOC is a one to two training attended by at a minimum the PSN Project Coordinator or primary point of contact and the Research Partner (RP). The training is an introduction for newly funded PSN sites on the PSN strategy and other data-driven and evidence-based strategies for violence prevention and control.
To enhance the effectiveness of the Smart Suite programs and to bring more “science” to the field, BJA has partnered with a team from the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University (MSU) to build an academy to help researchers and practitioners work more effectively and efficiently on crime reduction strategies.
MSU will meet with BJA Smart Suite Program POCs. SS TTA partners will attend the meeting as well. The meeting will be held at BJA/OJP offices on Friday, January 27, 2017, to brief the POCs on the Academies and to ask for guidance on delivering TTA across the Smart Suites.
MSU and the Smart Suite TTA partners will assess needs throughout the life of the grant and meet those needs through a variety of means as described under the goals, objectives, and deliverables.
MSU and the Innovations/Smart Suite TTA partners will develop a multi-level training plan ranging from basic orientation, intermediate and through advanced.
Materials were developed throughout the life of the grant including such items as Fellows Academy content, evaluation processes (e.g., SNA, Time Series, etc.) and reporting styles (e.g., executive summaries, full case studies, etc.) for varying audiences and experience levels.
MSU and the Innovations/Smart Suite TTA partners will develop the following items: Roadmap of existing resources, enhance MSU Innovations Suite Researcher-Practitioner Fellows Academy Website with links to partnering organizations & resources and develop online forums for a Smart Suite community of practice.
All tasks were completed throughout the life of the grant. Existing materials will be maintained. Enhancements and expansion of resources will occur under the 2021 SS TTA grant led by JRSA.
MSU and the Innovations/Smart Suite TTA partners will deliver new TTA products developed under this grant. Suggested products to be developed and delivered include:
