Thursday Feb 28, 2013 - 07:00pm EST
Event Description:

On February 28, 2013, at 2 p.m. (eastern time), in commemoration of Black History Month, the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) will present a Web Forum discussion with Mitru Ciarlante and John Rich, MD, MPH, on best practices for reaching young men of color exposed to violence. Ms. Ciarlante is the Director of Child & Club Safety for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, where she works to strengthen the clubs’ capacity to create safe places for children to learn and grow. She is a lifelong children’s advocate with more than 25 years of leadership experience in creating youth outreach and advocacy programs and policies that are developmentally and culturally appropriate for youth from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Previously, as Director of the Youth Initiative at the National Center for Victims of Crime, Ms. Ciarlante worked with the National Council on Black Civic Participation on a project dealing with Black children’s exposure to violence and victimization.

Dr. Rich is Professor and Chair of Health Management and Policy at the Drexel University School of Public Health. A leader in the field of public health, Dr. Rich’s work focuses on serving African-American men living in urban settings. In 2006, a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship was granted to Dr. Rich to design new models of health care that would surpass the boundaries of public health, education, social services, and justice systems to engage young men in caring for themselves and their peers. Previously, as a primary care doctor at Boston Medical Center, Dr. Rich created the Young Men’s Health Clinic and initiated Boston HealthCREW, a program to train inner-city young men to become peer health educators who focus on the health of men and boys in their communities.
