The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) National Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) is a competitive grant program that will provide funding to state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies, prosecutor’s offices, or a governmental non-law enforcement agency acting as fiscal agent for the applicant to inventory, track, and test previously unsubmitted SAKs (excluding SAKs that have already been submitted to the crime laboratory). SAKI will enable grantees to produce necessary protocols and policies in support of improved coordination and collaboration among laboratories, police, prosecutors, and victim service providers in response to this emergent evidence and casework; resources to comprehensively address the sexual assault investigations and prosecutions that result from evidence and CODIS hits produced by tested SAKs; as well as to support and optimize victim notification protocols and services.
