Don't Forget to Register for the NCJA/BJA Webinar - Tribal-State Corrections Collaboration Strategies for Meeting the Needs of Native Inmates
Please join the National Criminal Justice Association (NCJA) and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) webinar, Tribal-State Corrections Collaboration Strategies for Meeting the Needs of Native Inmates. The webinar will take place on Monday, February 3 at 3 p.m. EST. During the webinar, participants will discuss the development and implementation of culturally-sensitive services targeted towards tribal members in state correctional programs. NCJA, in coordination with tribal justice leaders, is working to increase the likelihood of positive outcomes for native inmates retained in state-run facilities or under guidance of state-supported community corrections programs.
Participants will learn about the New Mexico State Tribal Collaboration Act and which programs are currently being provided to Native inmates in the state’s correctional institutions. Additionally, participants will hear about the collaboration between the Snoqualmie Indian Tribe and Washington State Probation to provide services to tribal members. Presenters include David Huerta, Director of the Office of Recidivism Reduction of the New Mexico Department of Corrections (NMDC), Tex Joey, Native American Programs Coordinator for the Office of Recidivism Reduction of the (NMDC), Steve de los Angeles, Chief Corrections Officer of the Snoqualmie Indian Tribe, and Kelly Buchanan, Community Corrections Office of the Washington Department of Corrections.
