The Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service in Policing recognizes individual state, local, or tribal sworn, rank-and-file police officers and deputies for their exceptional efforts in effective community policing. Eligible candidates are officers and deputies in nonsupervisory positions that have demonstrated exceptional performance in one of three areas:
- Innovations in Community Policing, such as engaging in a problem-solving activity, creating a productive community partnership, or implementing a new policing program or initiative that has built trust, increased community satisfaction, or reduced violent crime related to human trafficking, gun crime, drug trafficking, and gang violence.
- Criminal Investigations, such as solving a cold-case homicide investigation, conducting a comprehensive gang or drug investigation resulting in the reduction of violent crime, or developing a program or strategy to effectively increase a department’s criminal case clearance rate.
- Field Operations, such as solving a particularly challenging crime through community partnerships, engaging at-risk youth to build trust and reduce crime and victimization, or using de-escalation techniques to successfully resolve a potentially violent situation involving a person experiencing a mental health crisis.
The awards will be presented by the Attorney General at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. in the Great Hall of the Robert F. Kennedy Justice Department Building.
