White House to Host Convening on Incarceration and Poverty this Thursday – Join the Live Stream to Hear the Discussion on Criminal Justice Reform
On Thursday, December 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET, the White House and the Department of Justice will host federal and state-wide officials, advocates, and academics to discuss criminal justice system practices, such as fees and fines imposed by local jurisdictions and fixed money bail, which contribute to the cycle of poverty and create significant barriers to re-entry.
Earlier this year, President Obama also announced new actions to promote rehabilitation and reintegration for the formerly-incarcerated. For example, the Bureau of Justice Assistance partnered with the Department of Housing and Urban Development to launch an $8.7 million demonstration grant to address homelessness and reduce recidivism among the justice-involved population.
The convening will build on these steps to address the vicious cycle of poverty and incarceration that traps too many communities.
Participants in the morning session include:
- Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch, U.S. Department of Justice
- Valerie Jarrett, Assistant to the President and Senior Advisor
- David Simon
- Michael B. Jordan
- Grover Norquist
The convening will be live streamed here.
