Check out the Safeguarding Children of Arrested Parents Training Video, Created with Support from BJA NTTAC to Outline Best Practices in Arrests Involving Children and Parents
The arrest of a parent can have a significant and potentially long-term traumatic impact on children, and may negatively affect children’s emotional, mental, physical, and social health. The Bureau of Justice Assistance, in partnership with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), has developed the Safeguarding Children of Arrested Parents Model Policy. The Model Policy was designed to help law enforcement agencies develop policies and procedures that mitigate this potential trauma.
The just-released training video—which was put together with help from BJA NTTAC—introduces and demonstrates the core principles of the Model Policy to law enforcement organizations across the nation. Check out the video today to learn more about:
- Recommendations from the law enforcement community, including chiefs of police and detectives
- The importance of partnerships in safeguarding children
- Stories from children who experienced their own parents being arrested
- Why arrests that involve parents and children bring unique challenges that require officers to use a set of best practices
