Check Out a New Implementation Guide from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has released a new resource for the successful transition of people with mental or substance abuse disorders from correctional settings into the community. In Guidelines for Successful Transition of People with Mental or Substance Use Disorders from Jail and Prison: Implementation Guide, SAMHSA offers 10 guidelines to assist behavioral health, correctional, and community stakeholders, in addition to examples of successful implementation in local communities.

The guidelines fall under four main strategies:

  • Assess the individual’s clinical and social needs, as well as public safety risk;
  • Plan treatment and response services to address individuals’ needs, both while in custody and upon reentry;
  • Identify necessary community and correctional programs related to post-release services; and
  • Coordinate and collaborate on the transition plan to ensure sustainable implementation and to avoid gaps in care with community-based services.

SAMHSA will also host a webinar reviewing the key elements of the guide on Thursday, April 20 at 2:00 p.m. ET. Register for the webinar.
