Join the National Institute of Justice’s Forensic Technology Center of Excellence for the three-part Opioid Crisis – A Public Health Enemy Webinar Series to learn more about how public and private organizations are working together to address the nationwide opioid crisis. This series will include presentations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), reference material manufacturer Cayman Chemical, and the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (N.C. OCME).

- “The Opioid Epidemic in America: CDC Response,” Tuesday, November 14 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. ET. During the webinar, participants will receive an overview of the opioid overdose epidemic and how the CDC has responded by improving the prescription of opioids, expanding the availability of addiction treatment, and reducing access to illegal opioids. This webinar will be presented by Dr. John Halpin, medical officer for the Opioid Overdose Epidemiology and Surveillance Team at the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.
- “The Industry’s Role in Responding to the Opioid Crisis,” Thursday, November 16 from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. ET. During this webinar, participants will learn how private forensic industry partners can rapidly collaborate and communicate with the forensic community to provide reference standards for new drugs of abuse, as well as offer analytical instrumentation to identify new substances in seized materials. This webinar will be presented by Cayman Chemical’s Director of Forensic Chemistry, Dr. Donna Iula and Quality Manager, Roxanne Franckowski.
- “The NC Statewide Medical Examiner System Laboratory Approach,” Tuesday, November 21 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. ET. During this webinar, participants will learn how drug detection has changed in recent years, as well as analytical techniques and strategies for more efficient casework. This webinar will be presented by N.C. OCME’s Chief Toxicologist, Dr. Ruth Winecker and Forensic Toxicologist, Dr. Justin Bower.
