APA's Prosecuting Non-stranger Sexual Assault Webinar: Overcoming the Consent Defense

Friday Apr 26, 2013 - 07:00pm to 08:00pm EDT
Event Description:

Please join the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys (APA) for their Final Fridays webinar - Prosecuting Non-stranger Sexual Assault: Overcoming the Consent Defense, which will be held on Friday, April 26. Sexual assault is a horrific crime, regardless of the perpetrator and the circumstances. When the defendant asserts a defense of consent, it usually involves an attack on the victim's credibility. This webinar will describe common victim behaviors and sexual assault dynamics and their impacts on fact finders’ assessments of victim credibility. Christopher Mallios, Attorney Advisor, AEquitas will discuss societal attitudes related to victim blaming, victim credibility, offender manipulation, and predatory behaviors, including the use of alcohol to facilitate the assault. Webinar attendees will learn proactive, offender-focused prosecution themes; how to overcome challenges related to attacks on victim credibility; and how to anticipate the consent defense and respond by overcoming common myths and misconceptions related to sexual assault victims and offenders at trial. This training is open to all prosecutors, law enforcement, court personnel and other allied criminal justice partners.
