The purpose of this annual Summit is for stakeholders to gather and discuss the latest in prevention and treatment in the area of prescription drug abuse. Five IIR staff members attended the Summit to enhance their knowledge base and benefit IIR’s support to BJA’s Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Program.

As part of the implementation of 4b, which includes the creation of Opioid Response Teams, the DL&PS will be collecting and evaluating information on evidence informed practices for Opioid Response Team efforts and creating a best practices playbook or model to distribute to their subrecipients (5 local police departments) of the 4b funds. The grantee is requesting any assistance on information on evidence informed practices for Opioid Response Team efforts and any model playbooks or guidebooks on best practices for opioid response teams.

While almost twice as many people are incarcerated in prisons versus jails on any given day, many more individuals touch the criminal justice system through a short jail stay than a stay in prison: Admissions to jails in the United States exceed 10 million per year. Substance abuse and dependence among jail inmates is prevalent: Jail inmates are 11 times more likely than the general population to meet the criteria for dependence or abuse, a figure that may have increased since the onset of the current opioid epidemic.
