An NDCRC webinar that provided an overview of current Bureau of Justice Assistance initiatives to address the opioid crisis and how local jurisdictions are creating programs and leveraging resources.
The Little Rock, Arkansas Violence Reduction Network (VRN) site requested training for their prosecution team in special offenses, such as domestic violence and sexual assault. The National Association of District Attorneys was selected as the provider and provided the three-day training to prosecutors and victim advocates on November 1-3, 2017.
Kelly Stoner presented “Facilitation Techniques II-Prepare for Trauma and Practice” and covered topics geared towards meeting the training needs of help subject-matter experts in the areas of tribal victims, tribal domestic violence, child abuse and sexual assault programs. She also discussed issues pertaining to VAWA Special Domestic Violence Criminal Jurisdiction over non-Indians.
Kelly Stoner presented “Legal Responsibility to Report Abuse and Protections For Reporters” and covered topics geared towards meeting the training needs of Kaw Nation tribal domestic violence, child abuse and sexual assault programs. She also discussed issues pertaining to VAWA Special Domestic Violence Criminal Jurisdiction over non-Indians.
A training for West Memphis VRN team
Reducing crimes of gun violence by juveniles and young adults, particularly those who are gang-involved, continues to be a critical challenge in many of our nation’s communities. Such violence has contributed to increases in homicides and aggravated assaults in some of our communities.
A national conference to showcase promising community prosecution programs
The film "Tribal Justice" will be shown at the Annual Conference of the National Consortium on Racial and Ethnic Fairness in the Courts. A discussion will be facilitated by Judge Claudette White and Jennifer Walter.
Chia Halpern and Jerry Gardner attended the Symposium on the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and Safeguarding Our Tribal Communities hosted by the Intertribal Court of Southern California.
Chia Halpern provided to OVW new grantees (at the OVW new grantee orientation) the TLPI generated chart that tracks which tribes have enacted: Tribal Law and Order Act Enhanced Sentencing (TLOA ESA)and/or Violence Against Women Act Special Domestic Violence Criminal Jurisdiction (VAWA SDVCJ). Chia discussed the TA services that TLPI provides in conjunction with the National Congress of American Indians for the Intertribal Technical Assistance Working Group (ITWG) for tribes implementing or preparing to implement VAWA SDVCJ.
