TTA services will include:
o Strategic planning designed to encourage the use of participatory defense methods and principles in the region.
o Increase community knowledge and understanding of relevant procedural and constitutional rights to ensure those accused of criminal violations can effectively advocate for themselves and effectuate their Sixth Amendment right to participate in their defense.
o Enhance community and stakeholder understanding of participatory defense principles through the use of surveying, education, and resource development.

CJI's development of a site selection strategy and the related materials to promote a competitive site selection process in line with BJA priorities to select a diverse set of departments of corrections (DOCs) contributes to the goals of this grant.

National Police Week occurs every May. 

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

National Police Week occurs every May, and in 2022 we will be commemorating it with live, in-person events. National Police Week will be observed from May 11–17. The National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum will hold ceremonies, including the 34th Annual Candlelight Vigil, to honor the fallen officers whose names have recently been added to the Memorial.

The 34th Annual Candlelight Vigil will be held on Friday, May 13.

2021 Virtual COSSAP National Forum. COSSAP 2021--New Partners, New Tools, Renewed Hope. Breakout Session: The National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors’ Center for Innovation in Health Policy and Practice promotes trauma-responsive approaches in the delivery of services to people who have experienced violence and trauma and are seeking support for recovery and healing.

Grantee Spotlight Session: COSSAP grantees shared their experiences, including project successes, challenges faced, barriers that were overcome, and best practices for continued services during these unprecedented times.

2021 Virtual COSSAP National Forum. COSSAP 2021--New Partners, New Tools, Renewed Hope. Breakout Session: Coordination of Medication-Assisted Treatment Upon Release from Incarceration. Research shows that one of the highest rates of overdose occurs within the first ten days of release from incarceration. The transition from incarceration to the community can be critical to future success for individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs).

2021 Virtual COSSAP National Forum. COSSAP 2021--New Partners, New Tools, Renewed Hope. Breakout Session: Jail-Based Medication-Assisted Treatment Programs: Common Elements, Unique Approaches. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is a highly effective option for individuals seeking recovery from alcohol and opioid use disorders.

The Jefferson County District Attorney's Office is requesting technical assistance and training from the Center for Court Innovation through BJA NTTAC. This vital TTA is to provide guidance in the development of a prosecutor-led diversion program and support during pilot launch. Requested TTA includes guidance in program development, samples of existing program materials, development of data collection protocols, selection of software system, curriculum workshop, and phone calls for advice during pilot launch.
