Led by community organizations, this project seeks to build better connections between the Hampton Roads regions’ public defense lawyers and the communities they are serving. Areas of focus include increasing community knowledge and understanding of procedural and legal processes and increasing defender knowledge and understanding of working with impacted communities.
The core group met monthly to discuss the goals/topics of interest of the project and plan next steps. The group has been working on scheduling a series of meetings with impacted individuals, public defense lawyers and subject matter experts Dr. Matthew Clair and Damon Venable. These meetings are tentatively set to take place in October.

July-Dec. 2024: Working with a collaboration of community organizations and public defender agencies, this project is working to help bridge the gap between community members and the region’s public defense offices by empowering community members to better understand relevant procedural and constitutional principles and create avenues for more collaborative defense work. We completed our virtual training with Dr. Matthew Clair on 3/18 and hosted a community event on April 18th, to share our discovery one-pager. We have also provided copies of the 1-pager to the area public defender offices as well as several community organizations to facilitate their access to this information.
