Charlotte and BJA had a call to discuss the status of their 2016 and 2017 inventories.
Randi was put in touch with Jacksonville to discuss their victim notification policy regarding notifying minors of SAK testing.
Hosted a Parents and Siblings Retreat in Baltimore, MD, November 2 – November 5th. 20 attendees, representing firefighters who died from 1998 to 2016 came from Texas, Michigan, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Ohio, Kansas, and Connecticut. Participants connected with peers that provided them support, hope and strength from knowing they are not alone. Time was spent learning proactive approaches that can be employed to navigate through the grieving process, making creative memories, and the participants spent time celebrating the lives of their loved ones.
Hosted the second Young Adult Retreat for children and siblings (ages 18-25) of fallen firefighters. The Retreat was held in Linthicum Heights, Maryland, August 3 – August 5.
When a parent or sibling dies, the relationship doesn’t end. As the survivor continues to live, the bonds and connections continue. This retreat focuses on those continuing bonds and how to carry the best of that relationship and that person forward, even while grieving the loss. The Retreat provides the opportunity to meet and share with others who have had similar experiences. Nine attended the retreat.
First responders are being trained to quickly enter into harm’s way to neutralize the shooter and save the lives of innocent victims in an active shooter event. In many circumstances, formally trained medical personnel will not or cannot be on the scene immediately to provide casualty care to wounded victims. First responders must be educated and trained in immediate casualty care techniques to save lives.
