Held on November 4, 2024 in collaboration with our training and technical assistance partners – the National American Indian Court Judges Association (NAICJA). This webinar was presented by the Honorable Carrie Garrow, Chief Judge for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Court. This webinar discussed how judicial interaction with participants is a critical component of participants’ success. Motivational interviewing, created by William Miller and Stephen Rollnick, is a method of communication and designed to help people explore and resolve ambivalence about changing behaviors. It is frequently used by counselors and probation officers. However, it is also an important tool that Peacemakers can utilize as a communication technique. This workshop gave an overview of the basic principles of motivational interviewing and through the use of role-playing scenarios demonstrate how Peacemakers can put it into practice.
The live webinar was held on Zoom and the webinar recording, PowerPoint, and all webinar materials are available on www.WalkingOnCommonGround.org. We had 137 registered and 82 attendees with 40 responses to the evaluation and 38 indicating it was useful and 37 indicating their knowledge level increased.
