On September 19, 2024, the SLATT team was contacted by the program director of Healing and Responding to Therapy (HARTT), a local nonprofit organization in Jasper, Alabama, which specializes in trauma-informed care, family support, and therapy for individuals and families in need. The director inquired about online training opportunities for HARTT counselors who provide services to youth teens who have made terroristic threats to local schools in the state of Alabama. These teens are referred to HARTT through the courts as part of a program administered by the Alabama Department of Youth Services.
The SLATT team determined that the specific training request was outside the scope of SLATT but was able to quickly refer the HARTT director to a SLATT SME who has supported SLATT virtual training on threat assessment and threat management. The SME, who is a Lieutenant with the Tuscaloosa Police Department and the commander of his agency’s behavioral intervention team, provided the HARTT director with information regarding no-cost behavioral threat assessment and management training offered by the Tuscaloosa Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In addition, the SME advised that this training could be customized to the specific needs of HARTT.
