Request to assist Isleta Pueblo (NM) Probation Department with effectively implementing evidence-based practices in tribal community corrections. TA Description: Explore the eight principles of effective offender intervention and identify how they impact your department/agency. Develop a departmental vision and mission statement to support evidence-based practices (EBP). Develop goals, objectives, and action steps for organizational change and development of EBP. Establish measures for evaluation of program and individual success.

Research suggests that as many as 60% of adolescents and adults with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD) come into contact with the criminal justice system. FASD is a prenatal brain injury that can make understanding and complying with probation conditions difficult, putting this population at higher risk for recidivism. Learn effective supervision strategies to improve supervision outcomes, prevent crime, and reduce recidivism.

This TA will involve an initial site visit to the US Probation/Tribal Community Corrections reentry court program for Ute Tribe members on federal probation that are reentering the tribal community. Based the site visit and observations made of the current program and cultural resources and traditional practices in place, recommendations will be made to enhance programming. Additionally, an in-person training will be scheduled after the site visit on Implementing Evidence Based Practices in Tribal Community Corrections.

In June, CSG Justice Center staff continued to engage agency leaders to plan for the implementation of Georgia’s justice reinvestment policies. State leaders submitted a request for continued technical assistance under Phase II of the Justice Reinvestment Initiative (JRI). The request is pending approval from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA).

In June, the justice reinvestment steering committee continued to meet and agencies further spent subaward funds. First, the steering committee had their monthly meeting. Along with reviewing implementation progress, the steering committee discussed data trends and ongoing issues with data reporting quality. The steering committee has asked the JR coordinator to remain in her role through September 30, extending her contract by two months at three-quarter time.

In June, CSG Justice Center staff participated by phone in a meeting of the Criminal Justice Oversight and Implementation Council. During the meeting, state leaders reviewed an implementation tracker that was developed with assistance from CSG Justice Center staff and is maintained by the JR Coordinator. This tracker will monitor completion of implementation tasks. Also during the meeting, agencies shared progress updates and discussed coordination needs to complete remaining implementation tasks.
