Molly Kovel, Legal Director for the Civil Action Practice at The Bronx Defenders, spoke about permanent exclusions from public housing for prisoners who are re-entering society. The focus was on how defense counsel needed to look to the future and possible re-entry issues when considering what is the most appropriate disposition in a case.

On April 13th, Robyn Mar, the Deputy Managing Director of the Criminal Defense Practice spoke on a panel regarding the necessity for bail reform across the country in criminal courts. Her lecture emphasized how the bail system as it currently exists impedes holistic representation, thus prevents necessary services from reaching underserved populations.

On March 8, 2016 Robin Steinberg, Executive Director and Founder of The Bronx Defenders spoke to a group of public interest law students at Georgetown Law regarding the tenets of Holistic Defense and why it is so vital to adhere to them when representing undeserved communities.

Social Workers from The Bronx Defenders presented at this conference on a panel focused on representing parents in Family Court who also had Criminal Justice Involvement. The focus of the panel was the necessity for holistic representation for clients in these circumstances.

Due to a growing number of information and referral calls coming into NCCJD about sex offender issues, the Center created a subcommittee on the topic formed by parents of teens or adult children who have been charged with a sex offense or are on the sex offender registry. NCCJD is supporting the committee to organize on this issue and provides technical assistance in this effort. To date a total of 5 individuals have joined the subcommittee (June 2016).

TTA recipients (public defender offices), chosen through a highly selective application process, receive twelve months of intensive, hands-on assistance focusing on those particular aspects of holistic defense identified by the recipient office. Integrating holistic defense into any public defender office is a transformative process and one that often happens incrementally. As such, we expect applicant offices to focus their requests for assistance either on a specific area or on those areas needing the most support and with the greatest potential for change.
