The goal of this project is to understand the scope and nature of violence in Jackson, Mississippi. Existing data will be analyzed to better understand the geographic and social structure of violence in the city. This analysis can be used to begin to design a comprehensive response to violence, to include prevention, intervention and suppression strategies.

The purpose of the homicide investigations and prosecution assessment and training is to assist local efforts to reduce violent crime, conduct high-quality investigations, and produce successful prosecutions for homicide cases. The SME team conducts an on-site visit to meet with personnel from appropriate agencies, particularly local police and prosecutors, to assess and review existing policies, procedures, and practices. For this engagement, the SME team will also provide training to Jackson VRN partners and participate in a community engagement meeting.

Detective Zimmon will work with BJA and CNA to ensure that the site receives SME assistance involving reviewing and evaluating the effectiveness of the New Orleans Police Department current Detective function. The goal of the assessment is to develop system improvement recommendations for the New Orleans Police Department Detective Bureau, including recommendations about: Operations, Management oversight approaches, Caseload assignments and distribution effectiveness, Specialized vs. generalized approach considerations, and Case management.

Post VRN Summit, CNA staff have taken lead in tracking and assisting in the coordination of all VRN resource delivery. CNA SSLs are working with their sites on a regular basis to support their participation and respond to resource needs. CNA analysts support SSLs through the coordination of regular calls, note taking, resource tracking, working with VRN TTA providers and DOJ agencies to coordinate resource delivery, and keeping BJA informed and updated of resource delivery status.
