In October 2022, the Pittsburgh (PA) Bureau of Police participated as a pilot site for the delivery of the Crisis Response and Intervention Training (CRIT). The CRIT is a 40-hour training program designed to prepare police officers in their response to people experiencing crises related to behavioral health (BH) conditions and intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

The National Public Safety Partnership Virtual Academy is a learning management system that currently houses five interactive, virtual courses for the PSP law enforcement community and other entities by request. This is also covered under grant 2019-DG-BX-K002.

Across the United States, law enforcement and behavioral health agencies have increasingly begun to incorporate peer support specialists in their responses to people experiencing behavioral health crises in their community. Peer support specialists are individuals with lived experience with mental health conditions, substance use disorders, and/or trauma who are trained, and often certified, to support others with similar experiences in their community.
