The CJI team is conducting a comprehensive system assessment of the New Mexico criminal justice system, with a focus on both jails and prisons. The quantitative analysis portion of this assessment includes a review of publicly available jail and prison data as well as the collection and analysis of data from prisons and a sample of jails across the state. So far, the CJI team has met with a variety of jail administrators, the New Mexico Corrections Department, and the New Mexico Sentencing Commission to discuss criminal justice data trends and data sharing next steps.

The qualitative analysis portion of this assessment includes a review of publicly available information such as statutes, court rules, administrative codes, case law, state constitutional provisions, academic journal articles, newspapers, as well as a variety of interviews with stakeholders across New Mexico’s criminal justice system.

The CJI team was involved in stakeholder engagement and relationship building throughout the state of New Mexico, to build confidence, trust, and participation across the state of New Mexico in beginning the JRI phase 1 process. In July, CJI worked on getting a letter requesting technical assistance from the Governor’s office and on a state assessment. In August, the team continued to work on a state assessment, with the goal of sending the assessment to BJA for approval.

CNA organized a group discussion format listening sessions with jail advocates, experts, and academics on behalf of the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). These listening sessions provided the opportunity for jail advocates and experts to share their thoughts, experiences, and perspectives on the needs of the field.
