The inaugural call agenda focused on how sites are measuring progress towards goals in the midst of COVID-19 and social justice demonstrations that created a unique set of challenges for sites in the spring/summer of 2020. Research partners discussed challenges in getting access to crime data and that crime data looked very different because of the unique challenge’s neighborhoods are facing. Several mentioned looking to non-traditional data-sets including such things as 311 data to get a sense of community impacts.

LeVar Michael and Matt Perkins with LISC Safety & Justice presented on separate panels for the IACP-organized virtual meeting of CBCR sites funded in fiscal year 2019. LeVar presented on lessons learned during the planning phase and in particular on managing cross-sector partnerships and authentic community engagement.

Washington, DC and Madison, WI shared information about ongoing efforts at their respective sites. Madison PD Captain Mike Hanson joined the call as he had recently made a public request in the Madison PD Police Blotter soliciting “reasonable, achievable ideas for what you (residents of Madison) think should be the best proactive in saving teens from arrest after arrest (which was also picked up by Madison’s local newspaper). Makenzie Nolan (Little Earth community of Minneapolis) spoke about CBCR efforts in their primarily Native American community. Natalia Lee (Austin, TX) described an ongoing challenging she is facing regarding ways to re-engage the community and build trust with the police department.

LeVar Michael, Senior Program Officer with LISC Safety & Justice along with former East Bridgewater, MA Police Chief Scott Allen, co-chair the newly formed National PTACC (Police, Treatment, Community Collaborative) Public Safety Workgroup. The Public Safety Workgroup is comprised of practitioners from across the spectrum of criminal justice, treatment, social service and public health sectors.

Donna Griffin was deployed to East St. Louis to assist the site on the role of the program coordinator and support their efforts to oversee BCJI strategies and manage BCJI partnerships.

IACP staff conducted a review of the Portland site's draft Action Plan. The IACP POC shared the Action Plan with Dr. Herold for her feedback and recommendations.
