The IACP invited the National Policing Institute (NPI) to present at the IACP 2023 Annual Conference held from October 14-17 in San Diego, California. This four-day event featured training, networking opportunities, and educational workshops on various topics important to law enforcement. The NPI was invited to present on the 4th day. Ms. Tammy Brown from the BJA moderated a panel consisting of four subject matter experts. Ms. Kerry Yerico from the NPI, Lt. Eric Vogelpohl from Cincinnati Police Department, Sgt. Joshua May from Chattanooga Police Department and Sgt.

The NRTAC team, with BJA and ATF, hosted an orientation and onboarding session to welcome the awardees of the FY2023 Local Law Enforcement Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC) Integration Initiative grants. The session included representatives from the 8 FY2023 CGIC grantees. The purpose of the session was to inform grantees of the CGIC concept, the site assessment process, grant requirements, and the assistance NRTAC will provide grantees throughout their grants.

The NRTAC team hosted the sixth prosecution roundtable, which included investigators and prosecutors from various CGIC sites. This interactive Zoom roundtable aimed to strengthen the CGIC investigations prosecution communities of practice. The roundtable focused on federal prosecution. The discussion focused on the process for taking a federal case and how to coordinate with the local CGIC.

The NRTAC hosted the 7th Annual Regional CGIC Multi-Site Training in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Cincinnati CGIC assisted in the organization of the conference and invited participating CGIC grantees to tour their facilities. The conference was a mix of panel presentations and breakout sessions. Presentation topics included the state of gun violence in the U.S., leveraging NIBIN in violent crime investigations, NIBIN and the preservation of forensic evidence, and using acoustic gunshot detection evidence in the courtroom.

Upon BJA’s request, the NRTAC team in the first National Case Closed Project (NCCP) Convening. Kerry Yerico from the NRTAC team attended the conference and presented on how crime gun intelligence can be used to support criminal investigations and improve clearance rates.

For law enforcement officers, responding to situations involving individuals with behavioral health conditions (including mental health and substance use) and developmental disabilities in a safe, effective manner can present significant challenges. Responding to demands for accessible, standardized, and high-quality training, the Crisis Response and Intervention Training (CRIT) was developed by the Academic Training Initiative to Inform Police Responses, with the support of the Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA).
