In South Carolina, Center staff Sheila McCarthy is working with representatives of the South Carolina Department of Veterans Affairs (SCDCA) to enhance the state’s current VTC court network through training, including developing virtual resources for foundational training for VTC teams.

In Maine, Center staff Monica Christofferson is working with statewide treatment court coordinator Todd Crawford at the Maine Judicial Branch to strengthen the role of defense counsel as well as create a tool to assess local treatment program compliance with the new statewide treatment court policies and procedures. Center staff will also be supporting the state with another initiative: assessing local treatment and recovery courts’ implementation of statewide policies and procedures via the development of a tool.

): In Ohio, Center staff Karen Otis continued to work with statewide coordinator Anthony Walton, and staffers Lisa Williams and Zachary Vicha from the Supreme Court of Ohio, Specialized Dockets in furtherance of Ohio’s FY21 statewide grant. In addition to procuring a treatment court case management system, grant deliverables include institutionalizing American University, Justice Program Office’s Racial and Ethnic Disparities (RED) Program Assessment Tool and NPC Research’s Best Practice Self-Assessment (BeST) for the state’s continued use.

In Georgia, Center staff are working with the statewide treatment court coordinator, Taylor Jones, to conduct a statewide, mixed methods evaluation of adult drug courts. This grant is being reported under different grant number.

Center staff are working with states in furtherance of the Veterans Treatment Court Strategic Planning Initiative. The goals of this initiative are to encourage the strengthening of VTC adherence to best practice standards, to increase readiness for states and local jurisdictions to apply for federal funding to support their programs, the successful replication of the VTC model, and the application of VTC principles to wider populations. Center staff will complete individual interviews of stakeholders and any follow-up focus groups, as needed.
