Carleigh Sailon from the CSG Justice Center presented at the CIT International Conference along with Brian Blick from Denver 9-1-1. The title of the presentation was "Sending Civilian Responders to 9-1-1 Calls". The importance of sending specialized responses to behavioral health calls for service was discussed. The presentation also highlighted the success of the Denver learning site. The call triage protocols for the STAR Program was discussed and the presenters answered questions from the audience.

It can often be difficult to link people to the treatment they need during a behavioral health emergency. Crisis stabilization units (CSUs) are one alternative to using emergency departments to provide crisis intervention to people in need. For this Ask the Expert session, we will be joined by Sergeant Jason Winsky and Dr. Margie Balfour from Tucson, Arizona, to talk about the CSU model in Tucson and how it has become a resource for law enforcement responding to crisis calls for service.

Meetings with DuPage County were held on October 13, November 6, and December 4, 2023. These meetings included the TA coach, IJIS Institute, North East DuPage Family & Youth Services, Addison Police Department, Bartlett Police Department, and Glendale Heights Police Department.

Session 3 of the the Community of Practice (CoP) on PMHC Wellness discussed putting together supportive programs for PMHC staff and how that flows directly from an understanding of the trauma and stress that PMHC staff can experience while working. CoP attendees discussed the ways they can build trust between their staff and understand the impact their work can have on PMHC staff's mental health. This session focused on how to develop a wellness program to address those needs.

The final session discussed how to use an evaluation to inform program improvements and develop ongoing quality improvement practices based on outcomes. This included strategies for communicating to a diverse set of stakeholders about the impact the program has on the community. The evaluator from the FY21 County of Durham, NC grant team joined the session to share final outcome reports and how the team has used the data to inform current and future initiatives.

In this orientation webinar, CSG Justice Center and Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) staff will provide newly awarded Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program (JMHCP) and Connect & Protect grantees with an overview of BJA, the CSG Justice Center, the program budget, the JustGrants management system, and the performance measurement tool (PMT).

Staff working on Police-Mental Health Collaborations (PMHCs) can experience trauma in a number of distinct ways that should be understood and addressed specifically, rather than with more generalized approaches. CSG staff and their JMHCP grantee guest speaker delineated the difference between secondary and vicarious trauma for attendees before engaging in discussions about different approaches agencies can take to support their employees.

In this webinar, CSG Justice Center and Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) staff will provide newly awarded grantees with an overview of BJA, the CSG Justice Center, behavioral health diversion and reentry strategies, the Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program (JMHCP), Connect & Protect (C & P), and training and technical (TTA) assistance. Staff will also give critical context about people with behavioral health needs in the criminal justice system.

This session introduces diversion opportunities before people ever come into contact with the courts through community-led and law enforcement efforts. Participants discuss these experiences with law enforcement and community-led efforts, including Law Enforcement-Mental Health Learning Sites with homeless outreach team components, with Harris County Sheriff’s Department and Wichita Police Department, in a panel format.

CSG Justice Center staff attended the Fair and Just Prosecution Annual Convening in Tucson and participated in a panel presentation about how prosecutors can holistically address behavioral health needs in the community. CSG Justice Center staff also discussed the Propelling Change: Prosecutor Call to Action project and used hypothetical case study examples to discuss diversion options for people with behavioral health needs.
